Stephen Daisley on Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael and Frenchgate | Analysis | Scotland Decides

Stephen Daisley of STV is hardly a CyberNat – this is his verdict on the trial of Alistair Carmichael.

The last six months cannot have been easy for Alistair Carmichael. The Orkney and Shetland MP has been dragged through the courts in the harsh glare of publicity at the same time as his party has collapsed into near-obscurity.His decision to leak a memo claiming Nicola Sturgeon had expressed her preference for a Tory election victory to French ambassador Sylvie Bermann might prove as fatal to his career as the decision to enter government with the Conservatives has been for the Liberal Democrats. The pursuers failed to convince the court that Carmichael’s actions rendered his re-election invalid under the Representation of the People Act 1983. However, it is difficult to see how he can rebuild his reputation after being caught trying to smear the First Minister, and ineptly so.
