Orkney Voles against Carmichael – campaign update!!!

shocked political commentators hearing the ruling today

The decision of the Electoral Court in the ‘People versus Carmichael’ case was published today. The judges have agreed that Mr. Carmichael’s behaviour may be covered by electoral law and have dismissed most of the arguments raised in his defence.

So, thanks to you, the law is being clarified – and this is a real victory – candidates can no longer make false statements about themselves at a General Election – they must tell the truth.

The judges now want to hear evidence about the nature, purpose, and context of Mr. Carmichael’s lies and this will probably involve him having to testify on oath.

Very few commentators thought we stood any chance of getting this far. Most must be in shock – poor Michael White at the Guardian, we really feel for him.  We have got here  because of the overwhelming practical support we have had from you, the subscribers to this campaign – no political parties, no big funders, but  people who care,  are angry and want to see real change happen in our political life.

We know we are  not 4 people taking on an MP by ourselves but speaking for the more than  5000 who are  determined to make sure that justice prevails.

If, together,  we win, the election will be declared null and void and there will be a by-election. The people in Orkney and Shetland will have a chance to vote, and this time, we will be in full possession of the facts.

This is all we are wanting.

If Mr. Carmichael loses at this next stage, then he will be debarred from public life for a number of years and could well no longer be able to practice as a solicitor. He may even face criminal prosecution but if he resigns  now, then, all that can be avoided, surely the best thing for everyone.

We have been able to pay all the legal bills so far because of your commitment. Lots of people have told us that they will contribute more to move the case forward. We need that help now – we have no idea of what this will cost but it seems that the evidential hearing will take 4 days and expense will be commensurate. Any money not spent on the case will be donated to Food Banks throughout Scotland.

Thank you for everything you have done so far. Together, we will make British politics more honest and transparent.
