The Moley Mole – the islands are peaceful

As an Orcadian resident, I am in the midst of what has been described as a divided community in the national newspapers. Online there is a palpable sense of this, where individuals such as myself have clashed with those in staunch opposition to the The People Vs Carmichael legal movement. Certainly there are some individuals who are vehement and unmerciless in their attack, but their righteous indignation has been thrown seldom. Nor have any “nasty Nats” leapt upon the parapets to declare their undying devotion to the ousting of the nasty, terrible Carmichaelean Beast.

Because he is not one.

We live in peace, Orkney consists of strong community-minded people who look after their own. This is an admirable quality present in many island states. Something that inspires the greatest respect, that  there are those willing to honour and protect those they care for. As it should be. But we can also disagree, strongly. The resolve of the Orcadian folk is that despite tumultuous upheavals such as these, we will carry on, our community as strong as it ever was.

This feet is sair but the ither feet is fine, we will always plough on.

This is Orkney, and whomever you might be – you are most welcome to our shores.
