LibDems EU Referendum confusion. ‘What about our farming subsidies? Orkney Hogboons ask Alistair Carmichael.

Worried cattle discuss leaving the European Union

The Hogboon came rushing in to the burrow clinging to a copy of the LibDem Manifesto.

“Lib Dem are wanting an EU referendum if the EU is after new powers. That’s what the manifesto says.  That did not worry me but the Guardian said Clegg is going further and has even refused to rule out supporting Conservative plans for a referendum on Britain’s EU membership. Its not even a red line!!

He kept on going, “That means he will support it. Risk   Big everything.  England may pull us out of Europe what with UKIP being more popular than his party  south of the Border.”

“Yer farmer will not be happy about that” I stated. “And your folk voted ‘no’ because they were scared of leaving Europe.”

The Hogboon looked worried,”Aye that’s right, it’s a lot of money. In 2012, 607 farmers in Orkney got £19,484,000.”

“They will miss that.”

“They will indeed. The kye are worried. Bessie is losing weight.”

” I noticed that,” I said, “well no wonder, not since Carmichael agreed to those funding changes. The NFU and the Scottish Government thought that was a really bad deal.”

The Hogboon waved his paws in the air, “Aye. Its enough to make a farmer vote SNP”

SHOCK Selkies leave Alistair Carmichael and LibDems for SNP. Zara from Unst tells us why.

Faroese_stamp_580_the_seal_womanZara, a well known Selkie contacted us from Muness in  Unst to tell us why she believes mythological creatures in the Northern Isles should abandon the Liberal Democrats. This is her story.

Unlike hogboons, Selkies are able to pass as human and many are registered to vote. Zara, like many others went to university and so is very passionate about Higher Education.

Until the last General election I always voted Liberal Democrat. Sending SNP MPs to Westminster seemed as useful as sending UKIP ones to Strasburg: that they did not believe in the institution or want to be part of it meant that they would not do their job properly.

I got really excited last time. We selkies believed in Nick Clegg  and thought that a  hung parliament  seemed a great opportunity a chance for the liberals bring new life to tired a “New” Labour that had lost its way. We wanted to create a coalition of social democratic parties that even Trows and Hogboons could sign up too. It seemed the  natural thing to do  and we  even dared hope  he would reach out to the SNP  a few more votes if needed. Nick Clegg betrayed all the mythological beings who voted for him when he made a deal with the Conservatives and  he put his natural opposition in power. He rejected the advice of Charles Kennedy who has since been proved right time after a time and one of few Lib Dems who still has my respect. They could have done so much better, they handled the coalition with Labour in Scotland well but they failed and failed badly.

After campaigning for no tuition fees for students,  the government Carmichael is  part of raised them massively.  He betrayed young people in England and put a tax on them for going to University that his family won’t have to pay. He helped set prescription charges that won’t effect him.

I will not be voting Liberal Democrat  at this election, I can’t trust them under current management. The one party that was meant to  support a different kind of politics turned into  double dealers worse than the rest.

“Why are we getting poorer and the rich, richer?” asks Svein Vole. Mrs. Vole replies

Alistair Carmichael was part of the Tory led government that let the 1000 richest families double their wealth

“How come we are poorer Mummy Vole?”, Svein asked yesterday.

Well, Mrs Vole replied, ‘Our Government is full of rich people with lots of rich friends and they were worried about getting poorer.  Big companies and their share holders also got cross about paying tax like normal people. If they were asked to, they would huff and puff and promise to run away. So, the Government has used something they call ‘Austerity’ as an excuse to take money from us and give it to their friends. Its something they call ‘capitalism’.

“Thats not a good thing?”then said Svein?

“No, it isn’t. We want a Scotland that is for everyone, the poor and the rich.”

“Is that going to happen?”

“It may, if people start voting for the SNP in Scotland and Labour in England.”

Alistair Carmichael wants Orkney and Shetland ferry prices to go up!! The truth about Road Equivalent Tariff

The ferry link Carmichael wants
The ferry link Carmichael wants

Alistair Carmichael, the LibDemSleaze candidate for Orkney and Shetland is lying when he says that we are being untreated unfairly in the Northern Isles because we do not have Road Equivalent Tariff .

He is doing everything he can to foster division between the Northern Isles and the rest of Scotland.  This is a daft policy of the kind of thing his colleague, Tavish Scott came out with when he wanted home rule for Shetland and got laughed at by everyone.

RET is a distance based fares structure, which underpins the Scottish Government’s commitment to providing one single overarching fares policy across Scotland’s entire ferry network.

The Scottish Government makes no secret of why.

For the Northern Isles, due to the longer distances involved, rolling out RET now or in the next few years would mean an increase on a range of fares currently available.

We have said that no one will pay more for an RET fare than their current standard single fare, therefore the intention is to phase in the introduction of RET to the Northern Isles over a much longer timeframe.”

The current system was begun in 2006, by no other than Tavish Scott when he was transport minister in the Labour/Lib Dem coalition. He was responsible for the current boats that many say are not cost efficient. The ferries are yet another mess that the LibDems have left us with that the Scottish Government now has to sort out.  Many skeptics thought that in the last consultation they would take the boat from Stromness but they listened to local concerns and made sure that we continue to have a choice of routes and that, in Orkney at least, no company has a monopoly.

Oh and Alistair, don’t forget to answer our questions about Cyril Smith. You will one day to the Goddard Inquiry  and under oath. Then we will find out what you have been covering up for Mr. ‘I am so sorry’ Clegg. Oops, not ‘covering up,’ I meant the files that you have decided not to release and the papers Liz Lynne is alleged to have burned.

Hustings in Stromness, 1st May 7.30 pm.

A reminder the hustings are on this Friday – no invite needed – just turn up and be ready!

The Orkney Vole

Hustings advert A hustings has been organised in Stromness Parish Church  by Cary Welling. All five parties are going to be represented. This is our  chance to hold our MP to account. I will be turning up. To be fair, I am telling the Hogboon and the Trow about it too.

Please share the post and make sure that people know about this opportunity.

Please note the venue. It is not in the Town Hall.

11 questions Alistair Carmichael refuses to answer about Cyril Smith.

Cyril Smith having a nice time at party conference

Alistair Carmichael is still not answering the VOles questions about Cyril Smith. We invite him to post a response. Please email him and if you get a new reply let us know. If he knocks on your door, give him a warm welcome, a homebake and a grilling.

Maybe another Scottish Liberal Democrat MP could help?

These are the old questions.

-When did you first learn about Cyril Smith’s criminal activities as an MP?
-What did you do to ascertain further information?
-What files has the party held on Cyril Smith? Where are they now? If they were destroyed, on whose orders?
-What advice did you give Nick Clegg on how to handle the situation?
-Did David Steel know about the system that was in place that enabled Smith to make one phone call to get out of trouble?
-David Steel’s unwillingness to act enabled Smith to continue his activities. Will you disassociate yourself from him?
– What practical support will the party offer the people Smith victimised as an MP?

And two new ones.

Did Liz Lynne ever tell you about the conversation she had with Martin Digan in 1996? The one she does not remember and is alleged to have burned the files over?

What is the difference between a cover-up and refusing to release the information?

Did Liz Lynne order files burned?

Where is Cleggie? Carmichael’s leaflets do not show Nick Clegg and admit, its the SNP or Him.

Who in their right minds would trust the LibDems to keep a pledge?  We remember what they did last time.

Alistair Carmichael has been distributing leaflets around the county that do not mention the truth about what he has done in Government. You would almost think he was in opposition as opposed to being one of the most powerful people in Britain. His leaflets make no mention of  Nick ‘I am so Sorry’ Clegg. Is he ashamed of him? He should be. We are!

The worst of Carmichael’s policies do not affect him or his family but people in England and Wales. Students have to pay tuition fees of up to £9,000 a year and have to take out a loan.  In England and Wales the cost of a prescription is £8.20. How much would a trip to the Doctor cost him back home, nothing. He is making other people pay.  Scottish Liberal Democrats are in a Government that makes English and Welsh people suffer, but thanks to the SNP they and their families are protected.

Carmichael seems to think that his personality should be enough and that he is not accountable for what the Government he has been in has done in power. He hardly mentions policy and behaves as if the LibDems own the people of Orkney and Shetland. We have had enough of being taken for granted. It doesn’t matter if he is a nice man or not. His policies have meant that 600 people in Kirkwall are using foodbanks. Even in Shetland, in the middle of all the oil work, the Salvation Army had to give out food- parcels. No matter what he says, Alistair Carmichael is part of the Government that has done that, has taken away the dignity from ordinary people/

Carmichael  admits that it is a clear choice between him and the SNP. Look at the reality of what he has  done in Government.   If you vote Labour, he WILL get back in and he will support the Tories, or anyone else who might just give him a job. Vote LibDem and nothing will change for the better.

Vote SNP and send Danus Skene to Westminster as part of a team that will represent Scotland’s interests and support a Labour Government. It is the only chance that ordinary people have of clearing out the corruption that has made our politicians a disgrace.

Saturday Breakfast with the Voles, Svein asks, ‘Why do people hate the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Daddy?

Since Svein upset Mr. Carmichael by asking questions he has become very interested in politics. This morning, it being Sunday, we had a conversation on about the News. Mrs. Vole joined in. She thinks children should know about these things.

He asked us “why do Scottish people hate the Liberal Democrats now?’

Mrs Vole started off, “We don’t hate individual Liberal Democrats, not even Mr. Carmichael. We don’t know if he is a good man or a bad man, that’s not up to us. We judge him by his public actions and what his party has done. They have been very bad. About how he is as a man, we know nothing.”

BOGOF Carmichael!!! Clegg abandons Scots Tories – say he will not play if SNP supports Labour.

Clegg abandons Scottish Liberal Democrats to their fate. Cares only for the anti-Scottish vote in England.

BBC reports, “Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has said he would not join a coalition dependent on “life support” from the SNP after the general election.

Mr Clegg told the Financial Times he “totally” ruled out “any arrangements” with Nicola Sturgeon’s party in the event of a hung Parliament.

Grassroots activists in the burrow today woke to the news that Nick Clegg will not support a Labour Government if the SNP is in any way involved. So no matter what the Scottish people say, Clegg will foist aTory Government on us, even if they are reduced to one seat in Scotland as the opinion polls currently indicate – and yes, that lucky winner could be our very own Alistair BOGOF Carmichael. Vote LibDem and get a Tory government for free, no matter what the Scottish people say. He might even get to keep his job as Secretary for State even though 58 out of the 59 Scottish constituencies don’t want his party.

The Hogboon, an old LibDem came around to the burrow with his head in his hands.

“They have abandoned us. Mr Clegg has deserted Scotland and only cares about English votes. He has given up. He knows that the only LibeDem left in Scotland may be Carmichael ” he wailed. “The only party left for him to support will be the Conservatives and they are as popular in Scotland as the Trow’s farts. If I vote for dear Alistair, I will get the Cameron but Alistair e is such a lovely man and he has done so much for the constituency.”

“Euuuch,” said Little Svein. “Trows’ farts are really horrible. What exactly has Mr. Carmichael done for Orkney and Shetland?”

There was a long silence as we all tried to think of something.

“The farmers won’t vote Liberal Democrat now,” continued the Hogboon to break sillence, “not if they have any sense. We all know that the Tories want a referendum on the EU and the English press want us out. So do UKIP. If we leave the European Union the farmers are finished. What can we do?”

Being a wise rodent, I determined not to rub it in. I have always thought that Alistair Carmichael is the bargain vote. Vote for him and get a Tory for free. I kept my mouth shut.

“Well,” Mrs. Vole said bravely, “we know that the SNP is committed to staying in the European Union and so is the Labour Party too. You could vote for one of them.”

“Yes,” I replied, “but remember that Labour stands no chance in Orkney and Shetland. The SNP might just pull it off.”
